Dispersed Camping Near Zion National Park [Coordinates]

Earlier this summer, Michael and I found one of our favorite dispersed campsites to date: a free spot on BLM land just south of Zion National Park. Off the Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Byway, this particular area offers epic views of Mt. Kinesava and some pretty spectacular night skies. It was the perfect home base for exploration around Zion.

There are tons of campsites in this general area. In fact, you’re allowed to camp just about anywhere at long as you’re at least half a mile from the Smithsonian Butte Backcountry Byway itself. (There are lots of off-shoots.) For us, we knew there was a vista at 37.142000, -113.061000, so we wanted to be close to that without being too close to a cliff since we had the dogs with us.

What we found was a truly amazing spot that was private from other campers yet still had stunning day and night views. Our spot had a pre-existing fire ring and many large boulders around for catching views, sitting and cutting firewood.

The coordinates for this spot are: 37.139167, -113.062222

One thing to note: four-wheel-drive is required for this spot.
